Evidence sessions and inquiries

The Committee held focused evidence taking sessions on key aspects of its remit over the course of Session 3.

EDUCATION, CHILDREN AND YOUNG PEOPLE

Autism in Education

The Committee invited written evidence and took oral evidence on 25 November and 2 December 2009 on autism in education.

Class sizes

The Committee took evidence on the Scottish Government’s class size policy from selected local authorities, COSLA and ADES at its meeting on 3 March 2010 and the Cabinet Secretary for Education and Lifelong Learning at its meeting on 10 March 2010.

The Committee also took evidence from the Cabinet Secretary for Education and Lifelong Learning on the Education (Lower Primary Class Sizes) (Scotland) Amendment Regulations 2010 on 27 October 2010.

Curriculum for Excellence

The Committee took evidence from the Cabinet Secretary for Education and Lifelong Learning on the Curriculum for Excellence on 27 February and 5 March 2008 and the assessment framework for Curriculum for Excellence on 10 February 2010.

Free school meals pilot

The Committee took evidence on 19 and 26 September 2007.

The future of schools management in Scotland

The Committee undertook a scoping exercise to consider the current, and possible changes to, structure of schools management in Scotland.

The Committee later agreed to consider this issue alongside its other scoping exercise into local authority funding of education and children's services.

The Committee took evidence on school estates on 16 and 23 April 2008 and 2 June 2010.

Scotland's Commissioner for Children and Young People

The Committee took evidence from Tam Baillie, Scotland's Commissioner for Children and Young People, at its meetings on 23 June 2009 and 24 November 2010.

Social work

The Committee took evidence on social work issues on 17 September 2008 and 4 February and 11 March 2009.

Teacher employment

The Committee took evidence on the Teacher Employment Working Group on 10 and 17 December 2008.

The Committee also took evidence on the issue of teacher employment from the Cabinet Secretary for Education and Lifelong Learning on 27 October 2010.

LIFELONG LEARNING, FURTHER AND HIGHER EDUCATION

Further and higher education

The Committee took evidence from on the Joint Future Thinking Taskforce on Universities and its New Horizons report on 24 January and 4 March 2009.

The Committee took evidence on a range of issues facing further and higher education institutions - including the Tripartite Advisory Group, widening access to higher education and the sector's response to budget constraints - from a range of stakeholders on 3 November and the Cabinet Secretary for Education and Lifelong Learning on 10 November 2010.

Offender learning

The Committee took evidence on offender learning on 25 February 2009 and 24 February 2010.

Review of teacher education in Scotland

The Committee took evidence from Graham Donaldson on the report of the Review of Teacher Education in Scotland on 26 January 2011.

The Committee took evidence on the Committee's skills strategy on 26 September 2007.

The Committee took evidence from a broad range of stakeholders on issues relating to broadcasting in Scotalnd.

The Committee took evidence from members of the Scottish Broadcasting Commission on 7 November 2007 and 11 June and 24 September 2008.

The Committee also took evidence on the Public Service Broadcasting Review on 11 June 2008.

The Committee took evidence from representatives of the BBC on 17 June 2009, Channel 4 and Ofcom on 9 December 2009 and STV on 23 February 2011.

The Committee took evidence on the Scottish Digital Network Panel on 9 February 2011.

The Committee took evidence from the Minister for Culture and External Affairs on the range of issues explored over the course of the session on 9 March 2011.
