The meeting opened at 2.03 pm

1. Health Inequalities in Scotland: The Committee took evidence from—

Dr Harry Burns, Chief Medical Officer for Scotland

2. Call for a Public Inquiry into the Infection of people with Hepatitis C through NHS Treatment: The Committee considered the evidence it has received on this issue and decided on what action to take. Members voted on two options:

  • to ask the Scottish Executive to establish an independent judicial inquiry examining the treatment of people who were infected with Hepatitis C through NHS treatment and examining the “look-back” procedure employed to trace them.

  • to defer any decision on establishing an inquiry until members have had an opportunity to review late evidence submitted and be briefed on any implications that the Inquiries Act 2005 may have on the matter.

The first option was agreed to by casting vote.

3. Committee Work Programme 2006/7: The Committee agreed to discuss its Work Programme in private at its next meeting.

The meeting closed at 3.45 pm.
